How to Update your Skincare Routine for Spring
Winter is on its way out, which means it’s time to say bye to cold, dry weather and the dry, itchy skin that often comes along with it. With warmer temperatures, higher humidity levels and more exposure to sun on the horizon, your skin may be in for a bit of a shock. That’s why it’s important to make a few key changes to your skincare routine as we transition into spring. These esthetician-approved skincare tips will have your complexion glowing in no time, ready for sunnier days ahead!
spring clean your skincare stash
It's the perfect time of year for a little spring cleaning. Start by taking inventory of the products in your skincare and makeup collection, paying special attention to their expiration dates. Skincare and makeup products have a shelf life, so it's important to toss out anything that is expired or is showing signs of contamination. While it's never fun to waste products, it's a great way to make sure you aren't introducing unwanted bacteria to your skin, or using products with inactive ingredients. Need help? switch to an antioxidant-rich moisturizer
Antioxidants are your skin's BFF, especially during spring and summer months. While they're well known for helping to brighten your complexion, the real magic is in their ability to protect against damage and inflammation by neutralizing damaging free radicals. Antioxidants also help to reduce inflammation in the skin, allowing your skin repair itself. Antioxidants perform these functions both inside your body, and when you apply them topically. So, while we recommend eating more antioxidant-rich foods like blueberries, watermelon, avocados and green tea, it's equally as important to integrate antioxidants into your skincare routine too.
Simplify your daily skincare routine by looking for a multitasking daily moisturizer like high five. Formulated with a combination of hempseed oil, bioflavonoids and pure essential plant oils, we call it your skin's daily multivitamin for a reason. high five has high levels of antioxidants including CoQ10 and Vitamin C to boost cellular turnover, protect with potent antioxidants and brighten for healthy, beautiful skin.
apply SPF 30 or above every single day
While a "healthy glow" sounds nice in theory, there really is no such thing. UV rays cause irreversible damage to your skin, with hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles being the least of your worries. And with so many transparent, weightless formulas today there really is no excuse!
Contrary to popular belief, your makeup does not contain enough SPF to protect your skin throughout the day because you usually don't apply enough of it. If you want healthy, beautiful skin for life then it's time to get in the habit of applying an SPF 30 or above (preferably SPF 50) every morning. It's important to make sure you are reapplying it throughout the day as directed too.
Confused about which order to apply your products in? Here’s what we recommend:
- cleanser
- eye gel
- water-based serums
- facial oil
- facial moisturizer
- sunscreen (on your face, neck and chest!)
- makeup
exfoliate regularly for a healthy glow
As we transition into spring, you might be noticing you have dry, dull or even itchy skin. Regular exfoliation will remove these dead skin cells and help unblock pores to prevent breakouts and allow deeper penetration of your skincare products.
We recommend exfoliating 1-3 times per week (depending on your skin's tolerance) using a gommage-style peel like high maintenance. This peeling mask is formulated with a combination of physical, chemical and enzymatic exfoliants which effectively removes impurities and stimulates cellular renewal without causing damage to the skin or its protective barrier.
consider double cleansing at night
You already know that cleansing your skin should be your highest priority, but now that you're wearing SPF every day (you are....right!?) you may find that one cleanse in the evening isn't enough to remove your makeup and SPF. Enter, the double cleanse!
The first round of cleansing will remove make-up, spf and impurities like oils and dirt. Apply your cleanser to a damp face and cleanse for at least one minute, making sure to concentrate on the T-zone, nose, and chin. Then, the second cleanse is able to purify your pores. We recommend using a cleanser that balances and hydrates while keeping your skin's protective barrier intact, like high priority.
