terpenes & bioflavonoids in skincare – what are they and how do they affect your skin?

If you’ve ever looked into the science behind High’s skincare formulas, you may have stumbled upon two words that mean a lot to us - bioflavonoids and terpenes. While these two compounds sound complicated at first, they are naturally occurring and are highly beneficial for your skin.

how they fit into the High Beauty formula

Bioflavonoids and terpenes are important components within High’s Biocanna™ complex or, ‘Secret Sauce’, as we call it. To make it, our Founder and Formulator, Melissa Jochim, combines Cannabis sativa (hemp) seed oil with bioflavonoids and terpenes that are also found within the cannabis sativa plant for healthy, beautiful skin.

Combining these ingredients is commonly referred to as the “entourage effect” which means they work synergistically together or, better than they each would alone. Now, let’s talk about what bioflavonoids and terpenes are, and more importantly, what their benefits are for your skin.

bioflavonoids

Bioflavonoid – a naturally-occurring compound which gives plants their color, attracts pollinators and fights environmental stressors. They can be found in a variety of plants including fruits (particularly citrus and cranberries), vegetables (especially dark green and red varieties), and herbs. Additionally, bioflavonoids are found in wine – especially red wine, as well as in black and green teas and dark chocolate.

Bioflavonoids in skincare are known to be anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, lower cortisol levels and maximize the benefits of Vitamin C by inhibiting its breakdown in the body.

High’s Founder and Formulator, Melissa Jochim, selected the following bioflavonoids for High’s formula because of their particular benefits to the skin. They are:

  • Red Grape
    • Contains strong antioxidant known as resveratrol
    • Protects skin from pollutants and environmental stressors
    • Antibacterial

Pretty amazing, right? Now, let’s move on to terpenes!

terpenes

Terpene - an aromatic hydrocarbon found in the essential oils of plants. Basically, terpenes are the compounds that gives plants their unique fragrance. Terpenes in skincare are found to be anti-inflammatory, detoxifying, and can help control sebum levels in the skin.

The combination of Petitgrain, Bergamot and Melissa Officinalis is what gives high beauty it’s clean, citrusy fragrance. Not only do these essential oils smell great, they also offer some amazing benefits to your skin!

  • Bergamot
    • Anti-inflammatory
    • Antibacterial
    • Detoxifying
  • Petitgrain
    • Antiseptic
    • Balances sebum production
    • Maintains moisture balance in skin
  • Melissa Officinalis
    • Antioxidant
    • Antibacterial
    • Anti-inflammatory
    • Supports body’s natural response to harmful organisms

Combined, these terpenes or, organic essential oils, help to stabilize healthy skin function by adapting to changing environmental conditions and your skin’s specific needs. Essentially, they act as adaptogens.

When we combine cannabis sativa seed oil with bioflavonoids and terpenes to create High’s BiocannaTM complex, it’s important to note that they all have different molecule sizes. This means that when the formulation is able to deliver the potent ingredients down to various layers of your skin where they can be used, instead of having them all sit on top like saran wrap.

Now that you know what bioflavonoids and terpenes are and how they can benefit your skin, I hope you feel just as passionately as we do about their presence within High Beauty’s skincare formulas.
